Bergamo, a hidden gem

Bergamo, a hidden gem

When most tourists think of cities in Northern Italy, they think of Milan. While Milan deserves all the hype it gets, they often skip over a nearby hidden gem. Less than an hour away lies a place that honestly feels like a secret waiting to be discovered: Bergamo.

When I first arrived in Milan, like most tourists, I only knew of Bergamo because of its small airport. And boy, was I sure missing out. Bergamo is divided into two distinct parts- the Città Alta (The Upper City) and Città Bassa (The Lower City). The Upper City, which is perched on a hill, is a labyrinth of picturesque cobblestone streets. Walking through it feels like stepping into a postcard, almost like a bit of Tuscany tucked away in Northern Italy.

The Lower City is much different, completely humming with life. Cute cafes and local markets make up a modern city that somehow blends seamlessly with the old. Yet, despite its liveliness, Bergamo never feels rushed. There’s a rhythm here that invites you to just slow down and sip your vino rosso. (which is completely socially acceptable to do at 11 am in Italy ;))

On both of my trips to Bergamo, I took a 45 minute train ride into the Lower City from Milano Centrale. There is a funicular line that connects the Lower City to the Upper City, which you can ride for just a few euros. It is a nice experience, but if you’re up for a short hike (or the line is outrageously long) there is also a scenic trail that will take you to the top in under 30 minutes. My first trip I hiked, since the funicular was closed on the off-season weekend, and on my second trip I rode the funicular.

Once in the Upper City, you can spend hours wandering the streets, window shopping, trying the local bars and restaurants, admiring the cathedrals, and just simply taking in the views. I spent hours soaking in the peacefulness of this city that felt worlds away from the chaos of Milan. It was just the solo escape I needed on a week when I was feeling a bit homesick.

After a wonderful day in the Upper City, I ventured back down to the busier Lower city. Here you will still find Italian charm, but mixed with a more modern vibe. You’ll find American chains such as McDonald’s, Sephora, etc. here, which is a very different vibe from the medieval Upper City. Since I visited at the end of November, I was delighted to find Christmas markets opening up for their first days. I strolled the markets and indulged in some mulled wine until it was time to catch my train back to Milan. I enjoyed my solo day trip to Bergamo so much that I opted to return with a guest I was hosting from the states!

If you’re spending time in Milan, DO NOT SLEEP ON BERGAMO!! It is such a lovely city with so much to offer. If you have any questions about the city, or would like a more detailed itinerary for a day in Bergamo, send me an email, comment, or dm and I will be happy to share!
